A Brief History
National Professor late Dr. Md. Ibrahim started a project named "Philit Pusthi Project" in Jurain of Demra Police Station near Dhaka in 1968 with the aim of improving the nutritional status of the people and improving public health. Based on the promising results of the Applied Nutrition Project in 1979 at the 154th Council Meeting of the Bangladesh Diabetic Association, the name of the project was changed to Bangladesh Applied Nutrition Research and Training Institute (BIRTAN). The Ministry of Agriculture took charge of this project in 1980. Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC) was entrusted with the project in 1993. In order to consolidate and strengthen the activities of BARTAN, the Great National Parliament passed the 'Bangladesh Applied Nutrition Research and Training Institute (BARTAN) Act-2012' and was published in the Bangladesh Gazette as Act No. 18 of 2012 on June 19, 2012. Bartan's Employee Employment Regulations were published in the Bangladesh Gazette on 11 July 2016.
Infrastructure: Bartan's head office is being built on 100 acres of land on the banks of the Meghna river in Araihajar upazila of Narayanganj. Here, along with international quality applied nutrition laboratory, training building, dormitory, office building, farm shed for research, pond, school and college building are being constructed. Besides, 07 regional offices with research and training facilities have been constructed at Barisal, Sirajganj, Sunamganj, Jhenaidah, Netrakona, Noakhali (Subarnachar) and Rangpur (Pirganj).
